The School Association ran a competition with the 5/6 students for posters advertising the school Fair. Congratulations to Gracie and Coco for their winning posters.
Our School Fair will be held on Saturday 2nd November. Members of the Fair Team will be calling on support over the next few months so check the newsletter and Seesaw of information and requests.
Evidences of Learning
On Friday all students will receive their Evidence of Learning (EoL) for either Science or HASS, depending on what you received in Term 2. Also, some classes will receive EoL for Chinese and Art. These work samples are a snapshot in time of your child’s learning and is connected to the Achievement Standard of the subject in that Year level.
If you would like to have a conversation with your child’s teacher about the EoL or their learning and or social development, please contact your child’s teacher to organise a phone call for week 9 (16-20 September)
Terrapin Performance - Feathers
Students were impressed by the clever production of Feathers by the Terrapin Puppet Theatre. The sets were stunning and the story, all about finding your team and accepting yourself, was delightful.
Jump Rope fundraiser and jump off
On Wednesday 18th September the whole school will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off, where for 1½ hours, students will be engaging in skipping activities to improve their heart health and show the skills they have learnt in their PE lessons.
This is a fundraiser for the Heart Foundation. So please send your child with a gold coin or more to raise funds for this worthy cause.
Surveys –
The majority of our students have participated in the Wellbeing surveys that will support our decisions in future supports for our children.
Thank you to all the families who have participated in the School Satisfaction surveys. If you have not yet done so, you have until the end of term.
Year 1 Phonics Check
Year 1 students have been undergoing the National Year 1 Phonics Check. This quick check looks at how well each child can ‘decode’ written words and whether they are making expected progress in reading. The Check is one of many evidence-based screens Tasmanian Government Schools as now using to ensure our students get the help with reading when they need it.
Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds. Learning that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters helps students decode words and spell them. Phonics is one of the essential components of learning to read.
Our students, from Prep to some Y3s have been having 3 x 30-minute focussed phonics lessons a week and our teachers have been regularly assessing, following student progress then making changes to the groupings as well as giving extra support where and when needed.
2025 class requests
The year is hurtling towards term 4 and the time we begin looking at our class configurations and student placements.
If you have a particular request for your child’s placement for next year, please email me by Wednesday 20th October. We consider every request and do our best to accommodate, but do not guarantee that we can do so.
If you are planning on moving your child to another school in 2025, please let us know by the same date (20/10/24) as this information is vital in the configuration of classes.
We will have our next School Association meeting on Tuesday 17th September – online – at 6pm. If you would like to join us, please email me. joanne.waldon@decyp.tas.gov.au

Kinder Apples
The Kinder Apples had a week all about bones. On Wednesday we visited the PCYC for a fabulous gymnastics’ session. We definitely needed our strong bones for this! At school we drew magic skeletons with white crayons then made them appear with a black wash. We cut and pasted bones and of course sang ‘The Skeleton Dance’ many times! Her are our magic skeletons, bone puzzles and pasta creations.

Antarctic Festival
On Thursday 22nd August 3/4B took part in the Antarctic Festival. We visited Mawson’s Hut and took part in Mobile Antarctic. Mawson’s Hut was excellent where we learnt that Mawson was a geologist, how the hut was constructed by 18 courageous men and the living conditions where wind gusts are huge. We then walked to the Pavilion where we learnt more information, some students dressed up in the gear that you would wear if going to Antarctica. It was a great day!

Convict Stories
We have been investigating the First Fleet and the reasons why the First fleet travelled to Port Jackson. We learnt about the Industrial Revolution, where the fleet travelled to and what life on the ships were like. Students researched a convict and wrote a narrative piece of writing in the first person. One student researched Mathinna and imagined what her life must have been like from a First nations person’s point of view. I hope you enjoy reading our stories.
We are learning how to make a variety of sounds and that sound energy causes objects to vibrate. We have been experimenting with sound and have learned: that sound can travel through solid, liquid or gas – Olive that sound can damage your ear drums – Bill that sound can travel really, really fast – Thea that sound can travel through water quicker than through air – Sofia that if the sound is low it makes less sound waves – Hugo that if the sound is high there are more sound waves - Eddie that sound can make things vibrate, especially low pitch sounds – Florence that sound can bounce off things – Charles that sound can go really, really far – Sophia that sound can be loud or quiet – Selwyn that sounds cannot be made in a vacuum – Willow that a vacuum is where that are no molecules to vibrate to make sound – Kiran that vibrating molecules make sound travel – Liam that loud sounds can hurt your ear – Jennifer that when the sound is low it makes more of a buzz – Claude that when a jar has less water it makes a high sound – Ryan that when a jar has more water it makes a lower sound – Aylin that over 20,000hz is called ultrasound – Theo that if sound is under 20hz it is called infrasound – Nuraz that sound waves can be many different sizes – Julia

Volunteers Required
First off, thank you to all the wonderful people who have helped in the canteen this term. Your help has enabled the school to operate a much loved and anticipated weekly event.
However, I still need helpers for every Friday in term 4. This is especially important for the first Friday of the term (18th October). Without this assistance day I will not be able to start providing food. So, if you can help, please contact me on 0417 550 920.

We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.

The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP cardEVERYtime you sign in.
