Weeks 7 and 8 saw the 3/4/5 students engaging in daily swimming classes. Students receive expert tuition in swimming at their own level. Students also learn about water safety including survival strokes. Some of the comments I heard about swimming were – ‘I like backstroke’, ‘it is fun getting to go in the deep end’, ‘freestyle is my favourite’, ‘I’m tired but I have enjoyed it’, ‘some of it is hard but I’m getting better’. A parent of one of our new international students commented how much his child enjoyed the experience and how much he appreciated the opportunity to learn to swim. Another parent mentioned how much her family appreciates the swimming lessons as not everyone has the opportunity to put their children into private lessons.
Our Department has been providing this program for Tasmanian students for well over 40 years and it is an important part of our students’ learning.
Jump Rope for Heart
Last Wednesday the weather hampered our school Jump Off, so we skipped our hearts out on Friday. The students engaged in various skipping activities, putting into practice the skills they have learnt during this term’s focus on skipping. Thank you Mr Nick Corney for the skipping lessons and the coordination of the Jump Off. We raised $292.00

Year 5 Play
On Monday, our Year 5 students performed the play The Not So Mysterious Disappearance of Cinderella, set in Far Far Away. It was a delightful play on the search for Cinderella. There was humour, various fairytale characters as well as a detective on the search. Well done to the Year 5 students, the sound engineers and to Ms Sharni Adderton – director extraordinaire.

School Swimming Carnival 14/10/2024
On Monday 14th October students from Grade 3 to 6 will be going to Clarence Pool to participate in our School Swimming Carnival. Bus will be leaving at 9:00 am. Students swimming ability will be assessed before the carnival. This is to ensure only confident swimmers will compete in the 20m races in a depth above their height. The carnival will begin at 9:30am and finish by 1:00pm.
The carnival is for both confident and non-confident swimmers. Participation in each event will earn house points so everyone can contribute to either Albuera or Byron House!
The events on the day will be:
20m Freestyle (grade 3, 4, 5, 6)
20m Backstroke (grade 3, 4, 5, 6)
20m Breaststroke (grade 3, 4, 5, 6)
20m Aquatic Underarm (grade 3, 4, 5, 6)
50m Freestyle (grade 4, 5 ,6)
Novelties: Wading, Noodle and Kickboard. Novelty events are for students who don’t swim in the 20m races.
Grade 6 House relay – Top 4 grade 6 swimmers from each house and gender compete. Selection is based on the results from the 20m Freestyle.
Students need to wear their bathers to school. They will need to bring underwear, towel, swimming, goggles (if required) and a bag for wet gear. Please ensure your child has plenty of food and water.
However, for the carnival to run parent help is required and greatly appreciated. If you can assist with timing or handing out ribbons, we would be very grateful. If you can assist on the day, please fill out form below. Please note volunteers must have a current Working with Vulnerable People card and Mandatory Reporting.
With our School Fair being held on Saturday 2nd November 2024, an opportunity exists for local businesses to support our school community by sponsoring a stall at the Fair.
For just $250, a local business will not only support a great cause but receive recognition for their contribution before, during and after the event.
Please see attached flyer for more information.
If you run a business or know of a business that would like to support our school, please touch base with James McCulloch on 0400 143 863 or james.mcculloch@sfg.com.au; or use the attached flyer.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have been busy showcasing their creativity and research skills through two projects.
In Mathematics, students have been exploring the fascinating world of geometry by drawing their own 4x4x4 3D hollow cubes. This hands-on activity not only helped them understand the concept of spatial reasoning but also allowed them to express their artistic talents. The students’ enthusiasm and precision in creating these cubes have been truly impressive!
As part of the HASS curriculum, students have been researching and writing information reports on notable Australian migrants. This project has given them the opportunity to delve into the rich history and contributions of migrants to Australia. From scientists and artists to sports stars and entrepreneurs, our students have uncovered inspiring stories that highlight the diverse and multicultural fabric of our nation.
During the term the tigers have been meeting regularly with our 3/4 buddies. This is a fabulous opportunity for the older grades to learn leadership skills and how to plan and create fun activities for their younger buddies.
Our first session involved holding a mini “potato” Olympics. We had so much fun engaging in different events such as: potato gymnastics, diving, breakdancing, short distance running, potato and spoon race and finally long distance (however, most of the potato’s retired after this event due to injury).
A much more sedate and less messy session was needed, so the 3/4’s listened to prep/1’s read. It was such a lovely day, and children sat outside on pillows in the rare sunlight.
Last week our buddies planned and helped the prep/1’s cut, fold and write a secret message on paper lotus flower. Our class was fascinated when they then placed them in water and their flower magically opened. This activity supported development of scissor skills and wonder.
We are looking forward to our next exciting time with our best buddies.
Thank you Mr A and Mr Watkins for making this happen.

Canteen Volunteers
Volunteering is an essential component of modern school life. The benefits of doing so are well known and are invaluable to the school, pupils, and volunteers. It is a fantastic way to help construct a diverse and complex community in which your child can learn, it provides a visible confirmation to your child of the importance of education, it demonstrates appreciation of the work teachers and support staff deliver every day, and it can provide a deep sense of personal fulfilment.
In a world where we are all time poor it is easy to dismiss the thought of volunteering as to difficult or inconvenient. Jobs are time consuming and stressful and require attention. But your kids will not remember your job. They don’t care about deadlines, colleagues or clients. However, they will remember you helping at the school. They will care that you are sharing in the single biggest activity in their life.
There are many areas at Albuera St where you can volunteer. This includes, but not limited to, School Association, class reading, art and craft, excursions and the Canteen. Discuss with class teaches what their requirements and needs are.
The canteen cannot operate without parent/ grandparent volunteers. Each Friday at least two volunteers are required. So far this year there have been several people stepping forward to assist. However, there are very few in fourth term. If you are able to help on any of the days listed, please contact the canteen (0417 559 920), fill out form below or the office with your name and available date.
18 October 2 people required to help 25 October Student free day (show day) 1 November 1 person required to help 8 November 2 people required to help 15 November 2 people required to help 22 November 2 people required to help 29 November 2 people required to help 6 December 2 people required to help 13 December 3 people required to help (last canteen of the year)
No cooking experience is required. All volunteers require a working with vulnerable persons card and must watch the mandatory reporting video (15 minutes of your life).
You get one chance at your child’s childhood. Volunteering at the school can make lasting memories for both you and your child.

Please remember to choose the correct order date on the Qkr! App.
We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

LEVIES REMINDER
Thank you to parents who have paid levies and to those who are making regular payments. Levies are now overdue, if you are experiencing difficulties with making payments, please contact Annette and discuss a payment plan. Payments can be made weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.
WWVP Card & Mandatory Reporting
The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP cardEVERYtime you sign in.
Information for those who need to apply for WWVP card
To volunteer at this school, you will be required to hold a “Registration to Work with Vulnerable People”. It is extremely important that parent helpers and volunteers are registered and Albuera Street Primary School is recorded in your application.
