Students swimming their 50m Freestyle event with the volunteers timing and judging.
Welcome Back
Term 4 is always a busy term, still with lots of learning as well as celebrations and end of year events. It is always lovely to see and hear happy students greeting each other and staff on the first day back.
Swimming Carnival
We had a big first day back with the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival at Clarence Pool. I enjoy seeing students engaged in a different aspect of their education and carnivals offer the opportunities for some students to excel, all to participate at some level and to promote sportsmanship and enthusiasm for your team. This year’s carnival was a close race between Albuera and Byron with only 3 points between them before the 50m races and finished with Byron winning by only 8 points with 498 to Albuera’s 490. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to the Sports Captains, the wonderful volunteers and Mr Corney for his organisation.
Here are some thoughts from some students about the carnival:
‘I thought the swimming carnival was really fun and I liked how we would earn points for your house even if you came last and didn’t place.’ Maia
‘Things I liked about the swimming carnival was that it was challenging and fun because there were 5 different races and all were challenging and fun to do. The last race was very long and deep. I got very tired after. It was 50m.’ Aiden
‘I enjoyed that there were a lot of races and a lot of people participated. It was very enjoyable knowing that even if you came last it’s helping your team get closer to victory.’ Teddy
‘I liked it when it was time for our race we would line up in our house groups, soon to be in the pool. Once we were in the pool Mr Corney would start the race with no delay. If we had to wait to start the race the adrenalin would start pumping through our hearts and the pressure was on.’ Sophie
‘I enjoyed the tension of waiting for an announcement to come through to say who has won the carnival.’ Edmund
‘I liked that there were only four grade 6 girls in Albuera so I got to do the relay even though I’m really slow. It was a fun experience.’ Estella
Chess Champions
At yesterday’s Interschool Chess championship, our students came out on top and have brought the Premiers Cup to our School. Congratulations to our brilliant students; Jikei, Louie, Santi, William, Teddy, Minh, Tom and Ben. Thank you to Santi’s Mum, Tina, for volunteering to supervise for the day.
PAT Assessments
Over the next few weeks students from Prep to Y6 will participate in online testing in Reading and Maths. These assessments are for noticing trends and are used by the teachers and Senior staff to plan for learning foci and supports for 2025 as well as informing end of year report ratings. Unlike NAPLAN, these tests do not result in a report to be sent home.
Sports Leaders’ Fundraiser
Our wonderful sports leaders planned a free dress fundraiser to purchase some sports equipment. They surveyed students and found that they would like to update the soccer goals. They raised $268.50. they also wrote to the school Association requesting that they use some of the funds from the upcoming Fair to add to what they have raised to get what is suitable. The students have researched suitable goals. It is great to see student agency in action – they had an idea, came up with a plan, asked for permission and ways to achieve this then put their plan into action. Well done.
Chinese Language Competition Awards Evening
Last Friday I was privileged to be part of the awards night for the Chinese Language competition that many of our students participated in earlier this year. I was honoured to be invited to preset one of the categories and to hear two of our students recite their poems for the audience. Well done to all the students involved in the competition and thank you to Mrs Flora Pan, our Chinese Language teacher for all the work and support you put into teaching and preparing our students.
New Gate
You may have noticed the new gate at the Byron St entrance. This is to add to the safety of our students near our busier road. Thank you, Leigh Reggett, for building this over the holidays.
Student Free Day
This Friday is a student free day where staff are at school engaging in professional learning and beginning to make plans for 2025. Staff will complete the next module in our 10-module sequence in learning about the Department’s Lifting Literacy priority. This module is about Oral Language, an important pre-curser to reading and essential in the continued improvement of literacy across the school years. We will also begin planning for our reading, home reading and looking at the books we have to support our students’ learning. The other area will be looking at classes for 2025.
Surf Lifesaving Safety Session
Last week our K-Y2 students engaged with a safety session run by Surf Lifesaving. They were shown what to do in the case of an emergency.
Farewell Kerrin McKeown
Mrs Kerrin McKeown has made the decision not to return to Albuera Street Primary School but to continue her new chapter in Canberra closer to her children. Kerrin has been an extremely valued member of our school for many years and has nurtured so many Kinder students, build relationships with many families, as well as been invaluable support and a sharer of information to our staff. Her work on our wellbeing focus was an essential aspect of our school. We wish her all the best for her future.
Parent Tip –
Thank you to Steve Jeffrey and Eldon Jenkin for holding the fort while I was on leave at the end of last term.

Albuera St Primary Fair – change of date.
The date of our school fair has changed to Saturday 16th November 12pm – 4pm.
In 2022, we were able to raise $18,000 which went towards funding the school projector. This year, we are hoping to raise more than $20,000, to continue supporting our wonderful school.
To ensure the Fair’s success, we are asking for volunteers. Whether it be rolling up the sleeves in weeks prior, or just helping on the day – we need your support!
If you would like to get involved, please reach out to James McCulloch (0400 143 863 or james.mcculloch@sfg.com.au) or Nat Mills (0407 319 447 or Nat-conway@bigpond.com) to register your interest.
An online zoom meeting with Volunteers will be held on Tuesday 29th 8pm – 9pm, so please get in touch this week.

- Jupiter is the biggest planet in our solar system and it has storms.
- Earth has 1 moon but at the moment has 2.
- Earth’s orbit is also know as The Goldilocks Zone.
- Shooting stars are not actually stars. They are asteroids.
- The sun is actually a star.
- People are working towards colonising Mars.

Grade 3/4B
Smart Goals for Term 4
Grade 3/4 have been writing and reflecting on their goals for learning in Maths, English and Wellbeing each term. We have written our goals for Term 4 and are aiming to achieve them by the end of the year.
Learner Asset- I am a Researcher
Last term we focussed on what it means to be a researcher as we investigated life as a convict travelling out to New Holland. We brainstormed lots of ideas in small groups and then came up with our top 5 to 6 main points that we thought was necessary when researching. Our class will vote and decide which poster is the best representation of our ideas.

We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

Student Medications
It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.
WWVP Card & Mandatory Reporting
The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP card EVERY time you sign in.
Information for those who need to apply for WWVP card
