Once again, we are having our Remembrance service at the Barracks on Monday 11th November (next week) starting around 10:45. As a school we will walk over to the Barracks and have our service in front of the memorial there.
We ask for donations of flowers and each class will have a bouquet made which they will lay at the base of the tree.
Parents and carers are welcome to join us. Please be at school by 10:30 and we will walk over together.
We thank the Barracks for their willingness to have us on their site for this solemn occasion.
Taroona High School Band
Last Thursday we were treated to an excellent hour of music performed by the THS Band. It was great to see some ex-students showing their skills as well as seeing our students bopping their heads and moved by the music. Our students also get to see what they might be able to do in high school.
PAT Assessments
Over the last two weeks students from Prep to Y6 have been participating in PAT online assessments. The data is used to help triangulate the other data we have for our students, NAPLAN and various Curriculum Assessments which support our rating for the end of year reports. It also supports the school choose our priorities for focus support and extension in 2025.
Pre-Kinder Sessions
Last week we had our first Pre-Kinder sessions for students who will be attending Kinder with us next year. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to get to know the space they will be in, the teachers, other children and for the parents to get to know each other. The last session on the 4th of December, includes a parent information session where questions can be asked, and we share the important information as well as some tips for Kinder.
Parent Tip – How my stress works.
Helping our kids notice when they’re starting to feel stressed is such a game-changer. Once they can spot it, they can learn to manage it.
I am looking forward to our school Fair, now on Saturday 16th November. There continues to be a power of work going on behind the scenes and we appreciate everyone who is giving up their precious time to support our school. Money will be going into some playground upgrades, supporting our Chess Champions get to Western Australia for the National Competition as well as continuing to support excursions and other programs.
I hope to see many of you at this week’s assembly. Friday 1:50pm

State Interschool Chess Finals 2024
On Monday the 21st of October, eight Grade 3-6 students competed in the interschool chess state finals at The Friends School.
The team had qualified for this tournament by placing second twice in events in Terms 2 and 3. Because of our previous results, we were allowed eight people at the tournament: William, Minh Nhat, Santi, Tom, Teddy, Louie, Jikei and Benjamin.
Firstly we started playing practice games, and then the tournament started: it consisted of twenty-four teams from all around Tasmania, including Punchbowl Primary School, Strahan Primary School, Stella Maris Catholic School, and St Aloysius Catholic College. Each team’s score is decided by adding up the four best team members’ individual scores. You earn one point for a win, half a point for a draw and zero points for a loss.
The first round begun, and tension was in the air. There was a trip to Perth on the line. Some games finished quickly, while others stretched over 30 minutes long. After the first round Albuera St landed on four points with wins from Teddy, Tom, William, Santi.
As the day went on, people were beginning to feel fatigued, but continued to battle it out. After round 4 we were left off the standings due to a technical error that was soon fixed. After the fifth round, the teams went out to eat lunch.
As the eighth round approached, we were all nervous and excited for the awards ceremony at the end of the day. We started the last round by shaking hands or fist bumping. Albuera St went very well in the last round, with most of our players winning their games. As the end approached, tables were cleared and the stage set up. The presentations started and we watched the individual awards. Then came the moment we were waiting for: team presentations.
Every team was listed from 24th place, until there were ten teams left to be named. It turned out that it was super close, with only 5 points between 10th and first. James listed tenth to third and we weren’t mentioned! James (the organiser) then announced that there was another tie between the top two teams, New Town and Albuera St, who were both on 24 points. They had to resort to their tiebreaker strategy, which means the team which had played the harder people would be the champions. James announced second place: New Town! Our Albuera St team screamed and cheered – we had won!!
Six of our players are now allowed to attend the national finals in Perth in early December. We are busy organising this and the school is helping us do some fund raising.
Lastly, a big thank you to Tina for supporting and supervising us during the three tournaments so far.

We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.
