How wonderful to have such vivid autumn trees to enjoy in our school.
Hobart City Council Travel survey
Albuera Street Primary School is working with the City of Hobart to develop a School Access Travel Plan that will help improve how students travel to and from school. Families are invited to complete a short survey to help inform the plan. Please complete one survey per student, and submit multiple responses if your child travels from more than one household. The survey is open until The survey will be open from 26.05 to 16.06 at www.yoursay.hobartcity.com.au/albuera-school-access-travel-plan .
The students will find out all about this on Monday 26th when the co-ordinator will be visiting all the classes.
Ps: The website will be operational only from the 26/05
TAFE Students Against Racism
One of our school’s foci for 2025 is on building a sense of belonging and connection within our school. This involves engaging students in their learning, supporting the development of social skills and having opportunities to understand other perspectives which in turn builds empathy. We have a diverse community of learners at our school with students from different backgrounds as well as different learning and thinking skills.
On Wednesday 7th May, our Years 3-6 students were involved in workshops run by Tas TAFE student group – Students Against Racism. This involved TAFE students from different countries, some of whom are refugees, sharing their experiences coming to a new country.
One of the activities that really showed some of the difficulty non-English speakers experience, including many of our own students, was when they were instructed to do something in another language. The students needed to follow non-verbal clues and repeat words as they gradually worked out what they were doing, like playing heads, shoulders, knees and toes or a game of numbers.
The staff and students thought this was an extremely valuable workshop to be involved in. We also had a parent send a message saying how involved her children had been and thanking us for providing the workshops.

Cross Country –
Last week we ran our whole school Cross Country. This year, after suggestions from members of our School Association, we trialled our carnival at Fitzroy Gardens. The weather was perfect and it was great to see the students run their races, and, I felt it was a great place to run with a bit of a hill and we could watch the students all the way. A particular thanks to the Y6 students who supported the younger students with their races. We had some who ran nearly every single race – well done.
Cross Country is always a wonderful opportunity to see some students shine in a skill not everyone is adapted to and others to give it a red-hot go, as well as practicing resilience and perseverance. The cheering by the students was also great to hear.
After some tight races, Albuera won with 192 points. Byron wasn’t far away with 172 points.

Canteen Week

This week is National Canteen Week when we celebrate the wonderful work that our Canteen Manager, Caron, does every week and the and the fantastic help our volunteers give. Without our canteen volunteers there would be no Friday lunches for our students.
Thank you
School Association –
At last week’s meeting, some fundraisers were decided on and we will need volunteers to make them happen.
- A lunchtime BBQ picnic – on Wednesday 13th June – Dress up in red to ‘paint the town red’ near the middle of winter. We need at least 3 helpers for this. Students will order their food the week before.
- Cake Stall – the last Friday of term – 4th July – we will need someone to co-ordinate this and volunteers for the day.
- Quiz Night – in September – date to be decided – Jana Higgs and Chris Duffield are the organisers, but we need other people to help.
Please let the school or any members of the School Association know if you can help. These activities cannot go ahead without volunteer helpers.
Contact Aaron Ryan, Jane Blakeway, Rose Flynn, Jana Higgs, Chris Duffield or me.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 19th June, online at 6pm. A link will be shared closer to the meeting.

Kinder Apples
A huge Happy Mothers Day to all our fabulous mums!
Lookout for our Kinder mums carrying the coolest tote bags around. The Kinder students painted themselves with their mum on bags for a special gift. They also made their mum a bookmark with why their mum is the best. This is what they had to say…
My mum makes the best chicken soup, I love Mummy cuddles, Mum helps me with puzzles, I love my mum because she gives me chocolates, My mummy plays games with me, My mummy hugs me in the morning and I love having breakfast with her, I love having a playdate with her in the school holidays, My mummy lets me watch TV. My mummy cooks the best food and gives the best hugs and tucks me in tight, I love playing jigsaw puzzles with my mum

The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma.
